A Walk to Remember

A Walk to Remember is a novel by American writer Nicholas Sparks, released in October 1999. It takes place in the mid-1950s in Beaufort, North Carolina, and describes the story of two teenagers who fall in love despite their vast differences.

Jamie Sullivan is the daughter of the Beaufort church minister Hegbert Sullivan. Jamie is known and adored by all the adults in Beaufort, she's always nice and helpful to everyone. However she doesn't have many friends at school and is seen as an outcast. Despite not having much money she shares what she has with everyone. She carries her bible with her everywhere; this is because of the connection to her mother whom she's never met. Her mother died giving birth to Jamie. Jamie is always smiling and she tells no one that she's dying to avoid the pity. Jamie sees the good in Landon and she believes in him.

Landon Carter is a son of a rich family. He lives with his mom and his father Worth Carter. His father is a United States congressman and so he's rarely with the Carter family. Landon is described as a typical teenager, he's a decent student, well-liked by his classmates and sneaks out with his friends to hang out in the grave yard (usually eating peanuts and talking about the dead Henry Preston). Genrenally Landon is a well behaved person but he doesn't really do anything in the beginning. He makes sacarstic comments when describing events in Beaufort or the people in his class and he doesn't like doing anything unless there's some payback or benefit to him. When he meets Jamie, he begins comparing himself with her and he's fascinated by her character; how could someone be so selfless? They're the exact opposites and when he's around Jamie he feels guilty and pressure to be a better person. Jamie is not forcing him to change, but he wants to be a better person.

As Landon spends time with Jamie, he soon realizes he has fallen in love with her and that love is some thing that changes him forever.
